Greg Smith - Cantonese speaking Westerner
Posted by 馬先生 under Cantonese
I don’t normally watch Pearl, however, I unintentionally came across a great video of Greg Smith who has lived in Hong Kong for 2 decades. After watching it on TV, I downloaded it from RTHK website, and then uploaded to Youtube for your enjoyment. Coincidentally, I think he looks like 大山 a famous Beijing Westerner.

It is very impressive for a Westerner to speak Cantonese with such fluency and his vocabulary would put many native speakers to shame. I suppose it’s a case of where there’s a will there’s a way.

Hey man,
Just stumbled onto your website, your Cantonese is impressive! Please don’t be so hard on yourself, from the few years that you’ve made efforts in your study, I believe you’ve got a lot to show for.
I am of full blood Chinese born in the Fiji Islands so even though everybody spoke Cantonese at home, I grew up in an English speaking environment, so I understand your frustration of appearing Chinese but not being able to speak fluently.
Overseas born Chinese have to work twice as hard to prove to they are as Chinese as their (grand)parents/family and at the same time they are just as ‘white’(culturally) as their European ‘mates’.
Ultimately, one learns to drop this unrealistic expectation of having one’s happiness depend on external factors i.e. other peoples approval.
Remember, the destination to fluency is not the goal, the trans formative value of the journey and how its changed your life is everything.
加油 ! Smilingly walk on my friend, you’re doing a great job
