How good are you then, why don’ you put a sample of your own on the site, so everyone else can compare?

Hi Simon,
I never intended to compare myself to people who have been speaking Cantonese for nearly their entire lives. These people have lived in Hong Kong and actively studied Cantonese for many years. I have only been studying Cantonese for a fraction of the time to what they have, so I don’t think its fair to compare me to them.
I just need a little more time to improve before I’m ready to upload samples of myself. I would only upload to simply seek feedback or note down my progress, not to show-off in anyway. At the moment, I don’t feel that I’m ready yet.
Thank you.

Oh, I thought you were in Hong Kong sorry.
How long on average do you think it takes a non-chinese to learn Cantonese well enough from scratch?
I have been learnig passively for 7 years and am no where fluent, depressing.

Hi Simon.
I never said whether I was or wasn’t in Hong Kong. What I am stating is that I haven’t learnt Cantonese for as long as these people, so it’s not fair to compare me to them.
I have collated a large amount of information on language acquisition discussing fluency and will write about it in future posts. I have actively studied French for 12+ years, so I have some experience in learning languages. I have seen people that have studied 2 years actively and speak much more advanced to someone speaking with 10 years passive studies. For me, I can only improve if I put effort in studying through Intermediate and Advanced Cantonese text books. I use my Guangzhou tutor to actively build my vocabulary, and my wife to practise what I’ve learnt somewhat passively. I think learning purely from the streets is not the best way to study the language quickly.
I’ll probably talk more about this later, but some helpful advice I’ve found came from:
Myth #1: “The best way to learn a foreign language is to go to a foreign country”
http://www.antimoon.com/other/myths-country.htm
Myth #2: “The best way to learn a foreign language is to speak it”

I think passive learning is only a small component of language studies. I feel to improve, one needs to actively study.
