I appreciate your interest in what I have to say. Certainly intensive listening is the key to developing fluency in a language. Chinese, including Cantonese, has the difficulty that such a great investment of time is required to learn to read. Depending on your needs it may or may not be worth it. It is best if you are able to spend the time to learn to write.
One important consideration is to develop the ability to accept uncertainty, imperfection and regularly forgetting words. You have to believe that you will start to get these things right when your brain is ready. In the meantime you just keep listening, reading and learning words and phrases (even as you forget them). Of course, what keeps you going is your enjoyment of the language and the anticipation of improved fluency.

Hi,
I was browsing for Podcasts when I noticed your site..! I have to say that I have almost the same feelings and experiences as you. I am in Taiwan I study Chinese “Mandarin” as well as teach English.
As a Chinese and Japanese Language Major in College I also am seriously about learning. So coming to Taiwan, I have had almost the same experiences. Also I am frustrated that the Chinese Language Education System, mainly focuses on Chinese Characters, “The Treasure of China” Communication is more important for me. Who wants to read Confucius or Lao Tzu when you can not even discuss the meaning with your friends. At any rate I have figured out a few ways to deal with this. “I dont want to tell my secrets hehe…” However, I recomend that you just master the basics. I know this is what everyone says however, Its a start and if you know where you are starting then you have direction..!
