Found a video from RTHK featuring several non-Chinese speaking Cantonese. I think my Cantonese is getting much better now, I can listen and understand 80% of the entire program. The program talks about immigrants and discrimination in Hong Kong.

I suppose the girl at Mac. look straight and prefer to talk to the Cantonese face with you are because of two reasons:
1. she does not know what to do in case the communication in Cantonese failed and you switch back to English. (In Hong Kong, many people are afraid of speaking English).
2. Everyone in Hong Kong chases after efficiency. Of course she wants to finish the transation ASAP. I don’t know how long the queue was, but surely it isn’t a moment and place for teaching and practicing a language as it does in a class room. The girl might only seeked for a quicker and effective way to finish the transation.
By the way, I am a Chinese in Australia for a few years. What I can tell is that it is not always true that local people are willing to shape or tune their English down a bit. The same things happened to me when I was in a queue of a fast food shop that the staff spoke to my friend next to me about the order in the end when he found that my friend’s spoke local English that was far more fluent that I do.
Even I was born and live in Hong Kong for most of my life, I was treated very impolitely by a staff (Tsue Wah Rest. at Causeway bay)when I ordered a take away. This was only happened on a trip back to HK last year, when I believed at that time, I spoke more fluent Cantonese than you were. The reasons were I was not speaking fast enough! and not in their jargons! (e.g. don’t use “white soup” instead of Cream of chicken soup; “two tea” instead of two cups of tea..etc. Efficiency and lazyness may be two of the reasons that makes Cantonese mutates quickly.
The same applies in Sydney that in buying train tickets, people prefer me to say “City;return;one adult one child please” instead of “I would like to have an adult and a child ticket to city and return trip as well please” that sometimes made me receiving odd faces.
