古典用語

Discover how classical Chinese literature, poetry, and philosophy continue to shape everyday Cantonese expressions. Learn to recognise and use literary allusions that native speakers weave into daily conversation.

Conversation

A
你知唔知我哋日常講嘅好多說話其實源自古文?
Did you know that many things we say daily actually originate from classical Chinese?
B
你講嘅係好似「半途而廢」呢類成語?定係仲有其他嘢?
You mean like idioms such as giving up halfway? Or is there more?
A
仲有好多!好似我哋講「塞翁失馬」,呢個典故出自《淮南子》。
There is much more! Like when we say the old man who lost his horse — this allusion comes from the Huainanzi.
B
我最鍾意嘅係「世事無常」,提醒我哋珍惜眼前嘅一切。
My favourite is nothing in this world is permanent — it reminds us to treasure everything before us.
A
仲有啲人講嘢鍾意引用唐詩,好似「舉頭望明月」嚟形容思鄉之情。
Some people also like to quote Tang poetry, like raising my head to gaze at the bright moon to describe homesickness.
B
我阿嫲成日講「知足常樂」,叫我唔好太貪心。呢句出自《老子》。
My grandma always says contentment brings happiness, telling me not to be too greedy. This comes from the Laozi.
A
所以話,學好粵語唔止要識講,仲要了解背後嘅文化底蘊。
So learning Cantonese well is not just about speaking — you also need to understand the cultural depth behind it.
B
真係「學海無涯」,越學越覺得粵語博大精深。
Truly the sea of learning has no bounds — the more I learn, the more I feel Cantonese is vast and profound.

ni1 geoi3 syut3 waa6 jyun4 zi6 leon4 jyu5.
This saying originates from the Analerta.

唔止 + A + 仲要 + B

An advanced connective meaning "not only A, but also need to B", used to express that something requires more than what appears on the surface.
學語言唔止要背生字,仲要理解文化背景。
hok6 jyu5 jin4 m4 zi2 jiu3 bui6 saang1 zi6, zung6 jiu3 lei5 gaai2 man4 faa3 bui3 ging2.
Learning a language is not just memorising words — you also need to understand the cultural background.

越 + verb + 越 + feeling

The correlative pattern meaning "the more one does X, the more one feels Y". Expresses a progressive relationship between action and resulting perception.
越研究越發現粵語嘅奧妙。
jyut6 jin4 gau3 jyut6 faat3 jin6 jyut6 jyu5 ge3 ou3 miu6.
The more I research, the more I discover the subtleties of Cantonese.

好似 + quote/reference + 嚟形容 + situation

A sophisticated construction used to apply a classical quote or literary reference to describe a current situation, demonstrating cultural literacy.
好似「塞翁失馬」嚟形容佢嘅經歷,最啱不過。
hou2 ci5 coi3 jung1 sat1 maa5 lai4 jing4 jung4 keoi5 ge3 ging1 lik6, zeoi3 ngaam1 bat1 gwo3.
Using a blessing in disguise to describe his experience could not be more fitting.
